I've been driving the Solaris Urbino around Riga for a few weeks and can say it's a pretty solid ride, especially for an electric bus. The smooth acceleration really stands out-no gear shifts, so it's much easier on the nerves, doesn't jerk around like the old diesel ones. The new driver's panel is easy to read, but honestly, there’s a lot of info on there, and getting used to the new menus takes some time. The doors feel louder than I expected, especially at stops during rush hour, but the big windows and mirrors help with visibility. I wish the heating didn't rely on diesel, though, it feels a bit weird for an electric bus. Battery is fine for city routes, just don’t expect long trips without a charge.

Alright, here’s my take after a couple of shifts on the Urbino 12: The accessibility is way better than on older buses. Wheelchair spot is actually usable, and the ramp works fast, never had a problem getting folks on and off. Passengers like that the ride is mostly quiet, just those door closing sounds get annoying over time. I wish there was a separation between the cab and the passengers, since there’s not much privacy, but I guess that’s how these are built. It does what it needs to do, just keep an eye on battery if you’re stuck in traffic a lot, since range drops quicker than you’d think.

I had the opportunity to test drive the Solaris Urbino 12 Hydrogen, and I must say, it performs quite well in terms of its innovative approach to public transport. The hydrogen fuel cell system gives it a significant advantage in range compared to traditional electric buses, which is a major plus for longer routes. One thing to note, though, is that the integration of hydrogen technology still incurs certain complexities, but overall, it feels reliable and well-integrated. The regenerative braking system helps a lot, easing the operation during trips. A great approach to greener city transit.
